“This is iPad mini,” Apple’s senior vice president for marketing Phil Schiller said as he displayed the new iPad at an Apple event in San Jose.

“This isn’t just a shrunken down iPad,” Schiller said. “It is an entirely new design.”

The iPad mini’s touchscreen measures 7.9 inches diagonally compared to 9.7 inches on the original iPad.

A 16-gigabyte version of the iPad mini with Wi-Fi connectivity costs $329 dollars while a 16GB model with both Wi-Fi and cellular capability costs $459.

The top-of-the-line 64GB iPad mini with Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity costs $659. The new Apple tablet also features rear- and front-facing cameras like later versions of the original iPad.

The new iPad has the same resolution as the current iPad.

Schiller said customers could begin pre-ordering the iPad mini on October 26 and Wi-Fi versions would begin shipping on November 2 to about three dozen countries in Asia and Europe in addition to the United States.

Schiller said the iPad mini weighs 0.68 pounds, is just 7.2mm thick — thinner than a pencil — and comes in both black and white models.

Apple Inc ,first time launched  the mini vesrion of its popular product  Tuesday, and suggested it as ‘ iPad mini’ with a screen much smaller than the full model, and also half the weight.  Customers can begin ordering the new model on Friday. Apple also revamped its flagship, full-sized iPad just six months after the launch of the latest model new iPad.

Apple’s late founder Steve Jobs once ridiculed a small tablet from a competitor as a ‘tweener” that was too big and too small to compete with either smartphones or tablets.  Now Apple’s own Mini enters a growing small-tablet market .

Apple is charging $329 and up for the Mini _ a price that fits into the Apple product lineup between the latest iPod Touch ($299) and the iPad 2 ($399). Company watchers had been expecting Apple to price the iPad Mini at $250 to $300 to compete with the Kindle Fire, which starts at $159. Barnes & Noble Inc.’s Nook HD and Google Inc.’s Nexus 7 both start at $199.

“Apple had an opportunity to step on the throat of Amazon and and Google yet decided to rely on its brand and focus on margin,” said Bill Kreher, an analyst with brokerage Edward Jones.
